About our school

Para Meadows School is a leader in providing individualised educational programs for students with special needs and complex disabilities.

The school is a unique learning community that is committed to providing a happy and caring place for students to learn whilst valuing the strong links we have developed with our parents over many years.

Communication between home and school is promoted and encouraged through daily correspondence and attendance at planning meetings where parents can advocate on behalf of their children.

Our talented and highly qualified staff work in teams to promote student learning.

Para Meadows School can offer families:

  • close links with speech, physio, behavioural and occupational therapists
  • book and toy library
  • an activity room for primary aged students
  • a sensory room
  • an assembly hall
  • covered outdoor learning areas
  • three school busses, all afitted to transport students in wheelchairs
  • a parent run school canteen 4 days per week
  • in school and community based work experience for senior high school students
  • up to date technology including computers, interactive whiteboards, iPads and communication devices and software
  • modern play equipment in both playgrounds
  • an indoor 12 meter heated swimming pool
  • fully equipped food technology kitchen and qualified hospitality teacher 2 days per week.

Students

Para Meadows School caters for the individual needs of students from Kindergarten to Year 12. All students at Para Meadows have a severe or moderate intellectual disability.

Many of our students have additional needs e.g. autism spectum disorder, physical and sensory impairments.

Satelite classes from Aspect school (school for students with autism) are also located at Para Meadows School.

Camps, excursions and community access

Our students participate in some adventurous camps and excursions during the school year. Students in high school visit Smiggen’s snow fields and Berry sports and recreation camp annually, and the primary school students are included in a variety of excursions both locally and outside the Illawarra.

Our community access program allows students to:

  • learn new concepts while experiencesing new environments and feel confident and conduct themselves appropratley in those settings

The arts

Music continues to be a popular component of the creative and performing arts curriculum at Para Meadows School. The school band perform at various events in the community throutout the year. All students have access to class based visual and performing arts programs.

Throughout the year we have several musical performances in the school hall for all the students to enjoy. High school students also access performances at the IPAC (Illawarra Performing Arts Centre).

High school students have regularly participated in drama programs, facilitated through Port Kembla youth project.

School environment

Para Meadows School is situated on nine parkland acres near Wollongong. It incorporates a large play area, a bike track and modern play equipment for Primary and High school students. Infants students have access to their own play area, with carefully planned and constructed facilities, designed to encourage social development and learning.
