Working with words

In the working with words block, teachers are focused primarily on systematically teaching children the skills they need to read individual words. Students learn to identify high frequency words and practise the skills they need to decode and swpell words they will use for reading and writing. The block includes:

  • word wall activities
  • individual word walls
  • colour-coded high frequency words
  • onset Rime word families
  • making words and spelling

The working with words block aims to:               

  • increase students recognition and fluency of high frequency words
  • assist students to decode and spell high frequency words through the use of class and individual Word Walls, spelling and decoding activities.
