Self-selected reading

The purpose of this block is to build reading fluency, to build confidence in, and foster a love of, reading. Students select from a wide range of topics and formats and are encouraged to read at their own level. Some of the texts include:

  • school produced emergent readers related to the guided
  • reading book
  • ebooks
  • tactile and sensory books
  • basal readers
  • student created books based on class learning
  • library borrowing.

The self-selected reading block aims to develop:

  • receptive language by listeing to read-alouds,
  • skills for selecting reading materials,
  • reading comprehension, and
  • expressive language.
