The purpose of this block is to build reading fluency, to build confidence in, and foster a love of, reading. Students select from a wide range of topics and formats and are encouraged to read at their own level. Some of the texts include:
- school produced emergent readers related to the guided
- reading book
- ebooks
- tactile and sensory books
- basal readers
- student created books based on class learning
- library borrowing.
The self-selected reading block aims to develop:
- receptive language by listeing to read-alouds,
- skills for selecting reading materials,
- reading comprehension, and
- expressive language.
